Walter Sisulu University, BTech: Corporate Communication students, received over a decade’s know-how in public relations expertise from local PR-leaders, Intengu Communications, on Thursday.

The engagement facilitated by the students as part of their practical assessment also doubled as a knowledge sharing session on the highlights and slippery-slopes of industry.

“It’s not about you, it’s about who you’re representing,” said Intengu managing director, Celia Theart.

Owning over three decades of communication acumen, Theart couldn’t pressed enough on the importance of reading and writing in public relations.

“You need to have writing skills. Online and social media are the fastest growing areas in communication and both require writing. If you can write, you will make it in PR,” she added.

Right on Theart’s heels was Intengu’s communication manager Vuyo Zambodla who spurred the enthused audience with words of passion and vision.

“Find your passion,” Zambodla said. “At the end of the day what you want is to jump out of bed and go to work with enthusiasm. Have a vision of what you want to do and then identify your strength within the communication market mix,” he added.

Theart advised the students to be willing to start from the bottom and work their way up.

“Don’t despair when you have been in a junior position for more than three years. Be willing to take on more responsibility in that position and grow yourself. Strive for excellence and build a strong work ethic,” concluded Theart.

Media studies lecturer, Ms Mva Tshepe, said the engagement was meant to build the department and students into more knowledgeable practitioners.

Intengu has trained over 100 interns over the past decade with a fair share coming from WSU.
