Message from the Student Representative Council (SRC)
The student representative council extends its message of welcome to new students who are joining the prestigious Walter Sisulu University starting 2016 academic year.
The Student representative council is a body of students regulated by the higher education act and further emphasised by the university statute as a legitimate structure hereby known as the SRC as a representation of students. The SRC of Buffalo city campus is made up of 8 SRC members led by its President.
Our responsibility as a structure is to represent students in all aspects during their pursuit of academic qualifications. Over the years, students face a plethora of challenges with financial and academic exclusions being the main threats and the SRC’s relevance in addressing these mayhems give reasoning for its existence.
The SRC is elected for a term of one academic year and in this case SRC elections will be conducted in September 2015 marking the end of term of office for the current leadership creating space for the new. It is important to indicate that the SRC Constitution allows every student to either elect or be elected into leadership as long as one meets requirements such as a clean criminal clearance, academic requirements as well as being a registered student of this university.
We would like to assure you that students of Walter Sisulu university are in good hands under this leadership, we are leading a constituency of +/-8000 students and we can testify that during the first half of our term we assisted thousands of students in many regards related to NSFAS, residences, transport and fees amongst other areas were we think that if history is to judge use it will judge us correctly. Management of the university, workers, lecturers and Librarians are some of the people that you will interact with during your tenure at WSU but we can tell you the truth that the people that you are closer with and easily relate with are student leadership because they are elected by students and are your servants close to your hearts.
Institutions of higher learning are a micro-cosm of the society and we believe that our students need to aspire to inspire before expiring so that they change their societies for the good. The SRC is in charge of many of its substructures such as house committees, academic societies and many other developmental organisations. We take mandate from students and accounts to students through the student parliament and through mass meetings that we will call during the year. We are responsible to organise events such as Fresher’s braai and Miss WSU during the year since we command a budget that comes for student levies which we use transparently.
Student political organisations are also in place such as SASCO,pasma and SCO which contest SRC elections and your President is from SASCO.As the SRC, we strive to see conducive sporting facilities, sufficient lecture halls, more bursaries and adequate accommodation for students during our time.
We are a generation of academic excellence and stability in the campus through effective engagements hence for the first time the whole of 2014 academic year they was no any single strike under our leadership. We encourage you to take your studies serious because that is the main reason why you are admitted at WSU but as you pursue your studies beware of HIV AIDS, remember to condoms and avoid succumbing to peer pressure.
We share with you the words from one wise philosopher who said, “Every morning in Africa, a Zebra works up and say I must run faster than the fastest lion otherwise it will be killed to death, a hungry lion say I must run faster than the slowest zebra otherwise it will starve to death”. Whether you are a lion or a zebra you must run faster in shaping your life. Your future is in your hands utilise this opportunity given to you to study, be proactive and feel free to report any problem that you are facing to the SRC Offices in all campuses so that we immediately provide necessary interventions.
Our primary struggle is to advance the interest of students through access and success but free education in our life time is the ultimate goal. Join student politics you will learn a lot about the student movement and remember the struggle for emancipation continues unabated. Thank you and God bless you.
Yours in student leadership.
