Sparkling opportunity awaits WSU alumni

Two WSU alumni are jetting off to the Chinese capital of Beijing in pursuit of a sparkling dream opportunity.

Thanks to efforts by the Deputy Tourism Minister Tokozile Xasa together with KSD Municipality Executive Mayor Nonkoliso Ngqongwa, the duo, namely Zamakholo Masina and Andisiwe Ndayi, will make the trip to one of the world’s most iconic cities to train in jewelry design as well as business skills. They’ll be joined by 13 other graduates from various universities around the country.

The youth will be trained at the Beijing-based SA Vaal Star Diamond Company for six months. The training is not specifically for art or design students but for those who are willing to learn about the jewellery trade. The training involves sourcing raw materials, packaging, design and selling.

According to WSU NMD Campus Director Noluvuyo Nqebelele, WSU has always had strong mutually beneficial relations with government stakeholders that seek to empower and develop WSU graduates with opportunities of this nature.

“When the opportunity came for us to equip our students with this kind of exposure we welcomed it with both hands because we understand that it will help them with business innovations that will be essential for their future as entrepreneurs,” said Nqebelele.

Masina, a WSU Public Relations graduate could not contain her excitement. “I was still in the process of looking for work when WSU officials called asking if I would be interested in going overseas, I couldn’t believe my luck,” said Masina.

Masina continued that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and would be a chance for her to broaden her horizons and learn new things that will bring new life lessons and experiences.

“I think this opportunity will allow me to come back home and start my own business that I will be able to market and profile because of my PR Diploma. Most of the time we complain about being unemployed but never think of starting our own businesses which is why I am so grateful for what is taking shape in my life currently,” added Masina.

Both Masina and Ndayi promised to come back and share with the WSU community all that they have learnt during their stay in Beijing.
